Wanna know the secret to making the best margaritas?

Ditch the store-bought mix! Like, ASAP. They are filled with sugar and who knows what else. And honestly they don’t even taste good? DITCH IT Y’ALL.

All you really need for a good classic marg is high quality tequila, fresh lime juice, and agave nectar.

In this case, we’re gonna be fancy and also add in some grapefruit juice and jalapeño.

Alright, so let’s make this marg.

Grab a couple of rocks cocktail glasses and salt the rim.

For a spicy margarita, I like to make the rim with chili salt. For this, all you have to do is mix together equal parts salt and chili powder. Put the chili salt on a small plate. Now simply run a lime wedge around the rim of your glasses (this will give the chili salt a base to stick to) and then dip the rim into the chili salt. Set the glasses aside.

Grab a shaker or a blender (I use my cherished Magic Bullet) and add in the following: grapefruit juice, tequila, lime juice, and agave.

Give the shaker a nice shake for about a minute, or give your blender and quick little blend! Definitely give it a taste test, and add more agave or lime juice if desired.

Once the margaritas are taste-test approved, fill your prepared glasses with ice. I personally prefer crushed ice in this cocktail, but you do you. Add about four slices of fresh jalapeño to each glass and then fill each with the prepared margarita mix.

One little thing! Between the chili salt rim and the jalapeños in the drink, it will already have a good spice. However, if you’re *really* into spice, then I would suggest muddling the jalapeños in your glass with a drop of agave before adding ice. This will release more of the spice from the pepper.

To make this a mocktail, simply take out the tequila from the recipe and follow the same directions. Just add a nice splash of sparkling water to the top of the mocktail at the end. (NEVER EVER EVER SHAKE OR BLEND SODA/SPARKLING WATER).

One last note: if you are like me and love mezcal, this drink is da bomb made with mezcal too. Same exact recipe, just replace the tequila with mezcal. A little Oaxacan love :)

Ingredients:

  • 1 - 1/2 cups fresh grapefruit juice (about 2 grapefruits)
  • 3 ounces (2 shots) of tequila
  • 2 tablespoons agave nectar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • fresh jalapeño, sliced
  • chili salt, for the rim

Instructions:

How to cook Spicy Grapefruit Margarita

  1. Add the chili salt to a small plate. Run a lime wedge around the rim of each glass and then dip the rim into the chili salt. Set glasses aside.
  2. Add the grapefruit juice, tequila, agave, and lime juice to your shaker or blender. Shake for about a minute, or give it a quick blend if using a blender.
  3. Taste the mix and add more agave or lime juice if desired and blend again.
  4. Fill the glasses with ice (I prefer crushed ice), and then add 3-4 slices of jalapeño to each glass. Fill the glasses with the grapefruit margarita mix and garnish with a lime if desired. Cheers!

Notes:

To make your own chili salt, all you have to do is mix together equal parts salt and chili powder. About 1/4 teaspoon of each should do the trick. If you want the margarita to be extra spicy, muddle the jalapeños in your glass with a drop of agave before adding ice.
